Fedora Core 5 on a Dell Latitude C610
General:This isn't my first installation of FC on this laptop. First, it was FC 4. Most things worked out of the box. There was some trouble with the video card and screen result ion. But those were easy fixes. The suspend function didn't work and I never could get it to work. Recently, I installed FC5. Like FC4, most things worked out of the box. The only things that did not work after the install were the fans, the wireless card and touchpad. The following show how I fixed these issues.
- Dell Latitude C610
- Pentium IIIm 1000MHz
- Intel 2200BG (internal wireless)
**NOTE**All of the following yum installs were done after I added the Livna repository. If you don't install the Livna repository, yum will say it cannot find any matches. So, here is how you do it.
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm [root@localhost ~]# /usr/share/doc/livna-release-*/livna-smart-channels.sh
WirelessFC5 almost worked out of the box with my wireless card (Intel 2200BG). The only thing I had to do was yum install the firmware. Install then restart. It should work.
[root@localhost ~]# yum install ipw2200-firmware
There is a nice wireless manager for Gnome. It is called Network Manger Dispatcher. It will show you a list of the available wireless networks. It even has a nice panel icon that shows up beside the clock.
[root@localhost ~]# yum install NetworkManager NetworkManager-gnome
[root@localhost ~]# chkconfig NetworkManger on
[root@localhost ~]# chkconfig NetworkManagerDispatcher on
Mouse:My touchpad was having a problem were windows and other things would randomly open and move around. After a little research I found this is a common problem. To fix this install gsynaptics and disable the horizontal/vertical scrolling options.
[root@localhost ~]# yum install gsynaptics
To get gynaptics to work, you must add a line to xorg.conf
[root@localhost ~]# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "SHMConfig" "true"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
